Life

Life in TTSH gs has been... well... tiring. I've always been a bit of a workaholic if i enjoy my work, but this is pushing it. Everyday i'm in hospital before the sun is up, and most days leave after it sets. There's never enough sleep and always more things to do, always things to know and remember, and people to please. My team is absolutely fabulous, from HO up to consultant, and I'd really have the time of my life here, except for a few things.

The system here really sucks. I was shocked that a major hospital can be so inefficient; but its all really true. We really do have to do a separate smartsense round (copying vitals onto a piece of paper), the computers really don't work (just witness the housemen fighting for those that do) and MO room printers are really just for show (i've yet to print anything from any of them), the computer system crashes with alarming regularity (oh system is down again, too bad).

And then there are those bastions of common sense and friendliness, the nurses. From giving a black face when asked to do anything at all, to absolutely refusing to sully their hands with anything from plug to blood, they truly have to be seen to be believed. There are a few friendly ones, but so far they have by and large been the minority.

And lets not get started with their obsession with 1st doses. Does any other hospital in singapore make u give biurette meds as a 1st dose? is the container going to have an anaphylactic reaction in front of me? or how about IV potassium as a 1st dose?? Has anyone heard of a patient allergic to potassium? I'd really like to see that.

So these things are making a posting i'd otherwise really enjoy a chore; and the sure knowledge that i have the rest of my houseman year here, that is a truly depressing thought. As for the wider question of whether i want to do GS or ortho; i still miss ortho with a vengeance. Looks like i'm going there, tho there's still a month of uro left to convince me otherwise haha...

I miss the time and energy to hang out with friends, to actually have a life, to have things to look forward to. Other than the absence of calls, that is... sigh...

will write a long angsty post abt call; perhaps after my next call. Which is tomorrow night.
