Leave again!
Yes after months of excruciating posting, its time for my final leave block as a HO. Words cannot describe how i'm feeling at the moment, so i won't even try. Let me just try to sum up the experiences of these last few months...
5C - where it all began; with 2 damn nice (1 absolutely mad) MOs, and a prof who absolutely represents the heart and soul of GM. It was a terribly painful intro, but at least from here, what came after didn't seem as bad in comparison haha
5D - home of my favourite con. Where I first felt competent (mostly thanks to the MO i got here, and his sheer laziness). Where I also took the only 2 sick days i've ever taken since starting work, and where i learned how to manage DM and play with OHGAs
9D - if the prev MO was lazy, this one was a moron. Together with a joke of a registrar, this was probably where i became truly independent and started getting annoyed at the idiots slowing me down. Also had my 2nd fav con, and learned about antibiotics use.
8C (RM) - independence for real now, for RM doesn't usually have HOs. This was a fab time where rounds were rapid, team spirit was immense and i learned what it is to have a good boss. One of my MOs this month was a bit of joker, but the other was probably one of the best i've ever worked under. also gained some confidence in dealing with respi problems
9C/7B - wouldnt do this month justice if i left out the overflow ward; this month was pure character building. In the 1st 2 weeks i worked harder than i ever have since leaving GS T5, with daily 7.30 - 7 pm, no post call, no weekend off, usually rushed/no lunch and still managed to do only the bare essentials. Only in the last week did that completely turn around, and life became tremendously good. Here i had a chance to manage 10+ patients entirely on my own, and put most of what came before to good use. Best part is, though the load was heavy, i got 1 of the best possible teams GM can offer, and enjoyed every min of it...
1 month left, and 1 ward left to go. I don't know where i'm going yet, but i think after all that, it really can't be much worse haha. At the end of the day, though we complain and whine, i think GM is an essential experience for any dr. Just that 6 months of it is ridiculous!
Changing topic; once more I've found a new master writer... picked up one of his books purely by chance about a month ago, and devoured it,and just finished the 2nd in the series. Alan campbell's Deepgate codex, if anyone has heard of it. I'm someone who is used to all manner of fantasy writing, but this one really sets a new standard.
Pure twisted, sick genius, the vivid world he's imagined, and the host of characters who populate it. No stereotypes here, just characters that are entirely real. And I absolutely love how he has taken familiar characters and titles, and turned them completely around. From a heaven that has barred its gates, to angels who are psychotic killers, to gods that are merely superpowered humans (with all their foibles and weaknesses) and a world where wonder and casual brutality go hand in hand. This is raw life at its best (and worst), and it makes for a compelling read indeed. Strongly recommended to anyone who has a strong stomach and a mind that needs to escape from humdrum life.
"I have found life an enjoyable, enchanting, active, and sometime terrifying experience, and I've enjoyed it completely. A lament in one ear, maybe, but always a song in the other"
