No longer
My student days are officially over; with one final tutorial yesterday, we reached the end of Ortho revision posting, the teaching years of m5 as a whole, and hopefully my time in a white coat all on the same day. From today, we are barred from the wards (except as patients! haha) and in a few weeks we will embark on the battle we have been training for since August 2004.
My life has really come full circle in a couple of ways; CGH was where I first started CSFC so long ago; and this final posting was back at CGH once more. I've always had a special fondness for this hospital, its friendly staff and lovely environment. Only grouse is the immense distance i must traverse to get there haha. And yesterday there was another final touch: the last tutorial I got was from the same surgeon who first met us in a scope room 3 years ago, where he immediately struck fear and awe into our hearts... Hearing "very good!" (a v rare occurrence btw!) from the same tutor who once said I need to work a lot harder just made it that much more meaningful...
Every year I have said I have learnt a lot; but I think in a purely medical sense, no other year comes close to this past one. From the 2 months working in the wards during SIP, to the medical and surgical revision postings where knowledge was literally hammered into our heads, and we were forced repeatedly to become faster smoother smarter and better, the improvement has been nothing short of phenomenal. Looking at my friends around me, I can see just how far we have come in such a short time, and it really makes me glad. You hit the nail on the head when u said we have truly earned our place in the wards; all we need to do now is to convince some crotchety old profs heh.
Yesterday also marked the end of my time in Singapore's education system; a time stretching back about 20 years (less if u exclude kindergarten n all). I'll still have exams to pass, but I will no longer be exclusively a student, having only to learn and pass exams. It is a little daunting to leave one of the cornerstones of your life behind, but I think (I hope!) that i'm ready.
But first, though, just over a month of intensive cramming and practising, arguing about arcane facts and spending almost all our time togehter. It hasn't escaped my memory that every day closer to the exams is one closer to the day that most of us head our separate ways, and our times together here will become just a fond memory.
Bring it on!
